24 November 2008

Tunis — On the occasion of the observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali addressed a message to the international community.

In his message, President Ben Ali stresses Tunisia's faith in the values of right and justice and its commitment to international legality and to the principles of international law, reiterating the country's constant support of and full solidarity with, the struggle Palestinian people in its legitimate struggle to recover its national rights, establish an independent state and fulfil its aspirations to live in peace, security and stability.

President Ben Ali writes that as much as Tunisia hails the UN initiative to draw the attention of the international community to the sufferings of the Palestinian people by urging the various parties concerned to actively contribute to put an end to these sufferings, as much as it expresses concern over the continuing policy of colonisation in Palestinian territories, by Israeli authorities and their provocative acts against the Palestinian people; stressing the fact that these practices are an obstacle to the progress of negotiations and undermine the foundations of peace and stability in the region.

Tunisia, adds President Ben Ali, urges the international parties to do their utmost to incite Israel to remove the obstacles which are an impediment to the peace process and calls on the international community, and especially influential parties and the Quartet, to increase their efforts to boost the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations in order to reach a fair, comprehensive and lasting settlement of the Palestinian cause.

Tunisia calls once again on the United Nations and the Commission concerned with the Palestinian people's exercise of its inalienable rights, to pursue their efforts and further step up their noble action in order to materialise and consecrate these rights in practice, so as to enable the Palestinian people to fulfil its legitimate aspirations for freedom and dignity.

In his message, President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali highlights Tunisia's commitment to continue its contribution to the success of all efforts and initiatives aimed at reaching a fair and comprehensive settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict in its entirety, which is likely to ensure the security and stability of the Middle East region.
