THE Lagos State commissioner for Youth Sports and Social Development, Prince Ademola Adeniji-Adele, has pledged the backing of the Lagos State Government for the Glo-Lagos International Half Marathon coming up on February 21, 2009.
The commissioner told a delegation from title sponsors, Globacom Limited, and race organisers, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), that his ministry has set up a high-powered committee to plan the involvement of Lagos State in the execution of the event.
According to him, the committee will liaise with the Local Organising Committee of the race to prepare grounds for a world-class event that will showcase the beauty and potentials of Lagos to the whole world.
Adeniji-Adele commended Globacom for raising the standard of the race since it took over its sponsorship and expressed faith in the company to surpass itself in the organisation of the next edition of the event.
Globacom's Executive Director, Legal, Mrs. Gladys Talabi, said that Globacom identified with the quest to build Lagos into a mega city and that the Glo Lagos International Marathon will help to showcase the efforts made. She expressed the appreciation of the telecoms giant for the support the event received from Governor Raji Fashola and his entire cabinet last year.
In the Globacom delegation during the courtesy visit were Mike Archer, the Director of Events, Sponsorship and Promotions, Modele Sarafa-Yusuf, the Marathon Project manager and Bode Opeseitan, the Head of Public Relations.
The AFN was represented by its President, Mrs. Violet Odogwu-Nwajei, who said that the federation has successfully marketed the Lagos Marathon to the rest of the sporting world to make the event one of the major road races that elite athletes look forward to every year.
The 2nd Glo-Lagos International Half Marathon is a 21.098km race, running from Inner Marina on Lagos Island to the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
Registration for the Marathon will commence on Monday, November 24, 2008. The LOC said that registration forms could be obtained from over 40 Gloworld shops across the country and Sport Council offices in every state of the federation. Intending participants may also register on-line at www.glolagos-marathon.com.
The LOC has says all the completed registration forms must be returned through the same collection routes not later than January 23, 2009.
