Last week Thursday, Kgalagadi Breweries gave football a shot in the arm by sponsoring the Coca-Cola Cup league to the tune of P6.6m over three years. The new sponsorship has increased by more than 300 percent compared to the last one that ended in August.
'Be Mobile' came in after the P4.5m three-year Mascom sponsorship expired. We would like to congratulate Coca-Cola for seeing the need to increase their sponsorship. Like the managing director indicated at the launch, Coca-Cola and Botswana football have been together for over 17 years.
By the time the new deal comes to an end, the marriage between the two parties will have gone on for 20 years. It was good to hear that Coca-Cola will still be there for football after 20 years. We hope that by then the sponsorship will have grown above what it is now.
The big money that is going into football means that clubs should reciprocate by making sure that the sponsors get the needed mileage.
We call upon the clubs to improve their organisation by building offices and hiring staff to run their day-to-day operations.
We know that 'Be Mobile' has made a commitment to help clubs to set up offices and provide them with the necessary facilities such as telephone and Internet connections.
We strongly believe that if this is achieved, our football will move in the right direction of professionalism.
We are tired of seeing teams being administered from the boots of some officials' cars. Now that there is more money in football, we would like to urge our clubs to engage in fair play as advocated by FIFA.
We would like to caution against bribery of officials.
We might be seen to be jumping the gun, but we would like to call for caution early so that we are not caught off guard. The best teams should always win whether it is in the league or cup competitions.
