Uganda: Former Chief Justice Sues Two Over Land

Kampala — FORMER Chief Justice Samuel Wako Wambuzi has sued two men for fraudulently obtaining administration rights of land belonging to his late wife.

Wambuzi said Charles Bahumure helped Ibrahim Muwonge to get the letters of administration.

Through his lawyer, Joseph Luswata of Ssebalu, Lule Advocates, Wambuzi is seeking a court order to cancel the powers of administration.

Luswata on Friday told Nakawa High Court judge Joseph Murangira that after Muwonge forged the powers to administer the property, he sold the land to Bahumure.

Wambuzi said Muwonge had agreed to sell the landto Bahumure, provided he facilitated the process of procuring the letters of administration and the transfer of the property.

After court learnt that Bahumure had sold about 40 acres of the disputed land, it issued a restraining order stopping anyone from tampering with the property until the suit is disposed of.

Wambuzi said Muwonge told the Mubende Chief Magistrate's Court that Gladys Nsibirwa Wambuzi was his grandmother, who had left him the property.

The disputed land that measures about 100 acres is located on Block 757, Plot 1, in Lwengo sub-county, Kiboga district.

Wambuzi said by the time Muwonge masqueraded as his wife's grandson in February 1998, she was still alive and she had no relationship with Muwonge.

On Friday, Muwonge appeared in court requesting to file a defence.

Asked why he came late to court, Muwonge said he was illiterate, adding that he did not understand why he had been given the papers.

His own lawyer, David Mushabe of Tumusiime, Kabega and Company Advocates, had objected to Muwonge's request, but the judge overruled him and allowed Muwonge to file a defence before November 25.

The court also ruled that the hearing would start on December 5.
