Kampala — MAERSK donated 22 containers to selected orphanages and children homes last year, Mohan Kulkarni, the managing director, has said.

He said the containers were turned into fully-furnished classrooms to accommodate about 12 pupils each.

"We wanted needy children to access education in a suitable and reasonably comfortable environment," he said.

He added that the shipping firm was fulfilling its its corporate social responsibility by assisting children who would normally be deprived of a chance education.

"This will also help us establish a relationship with the community in which our project is located," he said.

Mohan said the first phase of the classrooms was given to selected needy children's homes in July.
