Uganda: Contaminated Milk Poured

Kampala — THOUSANDS of litres of milk diluted with water were impounded in the north and poured by the Dairy Development Authority (DDA).

Charles Lutaro, a milk inspector, said the authority had deployed inspectors in the 10 districts of the north following complaints from the public.

"We deploy inspectors at strategic routes to towns to check the purity of the milk before allowing the seller to proceed to town," Lutaro said.

He said diluted milk puts the health of the public at risk.

He added that milk kept in jerrycans was unsafe because the jerrycans affect its nutritious contents.

"Only cans are supposed to carry milk."

"Next time we shall prosecute the unscrupulous milk sellers," he warned.

Dr Ongu Elim, the Apac district veterinary officer, said reports indicate that some milk sellers use dirty water when diluting the milk.

He also advised the farmers to improve hygiene to avoid contaminating milk when they are milking.

"Farmers must first wash the their hands and the cow's teats before the exercise," he said, adding that even containers must be free from bad odour.

as milk is very sensitive," Ongu Elim said.

"Vehicles carrying fish must not be used for transporting milk. It badly affects the smell of milk being consumed," Ongu said.

Ongu says, "The milk sellers would rather in crease the price of the product instead of mixing with water, detrimental to the lives of consumers."
