Kampala — FACE Technologies should work with the Uganda Revenue Authority to ease the process of acquiring permits.
Timothy Baguma, the chairman of the Transport Licensing Board (TLB), said delays in processing driving permits by the firm were frustrating the public and had led some people to acquire fake ones.
"Motorists have been responding positively, but the prolonged, unnecessary and bureaucratic process of getting genuine computerised permits have made some people to resort to the fake one sold on the streets," Baguma said.
Face Technologies was contarcted by the Government to issue computerised driving permits.
Baguma made the remarks during a field tour of the Kyambogo-based company by the board following complaints from the public over the delays in processing permits.
Meanwhile, the firm has opened upcountry branches to make it easy for motorists outside Kampala to acquire permits.
Linda Minega, the operations manager, said they had opened branches in Gulu, Mbale, Mbarara and Fort Portal, adding that more would be opened in other districts soon to meet the increasing demand.
Steven Kasiima, the Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety, advised the Police vehicle inspection unit, which conducts driving tests for driving permit applicants, to indicate the health defects of the applicants in their permits.
"If one is tested with spectacles because of eye defects, it must be reflected in the driving permit.
"If such a person is found driving without glasses, they would be committing an offence and would be charged," Kasiima said.
