Zambia: Instant Justice Mob Beats Thieving Resident to Death

25 November 2008

AN instant justice mob on Sunday night killed a suspected thief who broke into a house in Bauleni Township in Lusaka and stole goods worth K600,000.

Zambia Police Service spokesperson Bonny Kapeso who confirmed the death of Charles Bwalya, 28, of Bauleni Township, said the incident happened around 20:00 hours.

Mr Kapeso said police arrested the deceased's friend who was still detained in police custody to help the service with the investigations.

He said the incident happened at Nyumba Yanga Police Post where Bwalya later died as a result of internal injuries he sustained from the uncompromising mob.

"The duo allegedly broke into the house of the named resident of Bauleni Compound after breaking the door and stole property worth K600,000," he said.

He said the body of the deceased was lying in the mortuary at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).

Police in Lusaka have also arrested two Grade 12 pupils at Highland High school in Kabanana Site and Service after they were found with pre-written Commerce examination papers.

Mr Kapeso said the pupils were on Friday caught by the deputy head-teacher with the pre-answered examination papers.

He said the pupils were accordingly charged and will appear in court soon.

Meanwhile, two minors aged two and seven were on Sunday defiled in separate incidents in Kapiri Mposhi and Petauke districts respectively.

Mr Kapeso said suspects were however on the run and police have launched investigations.

"The two incidents occurred at 10:00 hours at Kapiri Mposhi turn off and 11:00 hours at the Showgrounds compound in Petauke," he said.
