24 November 2008

Abuja — Supervising Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Alhaji Remi Babalola, has assured that the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) would continue to maintain the environment and ensure that it becomes one of the 20 greatest cities in the world by the year 2020.

Babalola gave this assurance while hosting officials of Abuja Newspapers Vendors Association (ANVA) in his office at the weekend.

He said comprehensive nature of the Abuja Master Plan had been outlined from inception, to allow all sectors have adequate opportunity to discharge their functions and complement one another, adding that government would serve as catalyst towards achieving this desire.

Babalola assured that the FCTA would, in conjunction with ANVA, work out an amicable way of keeping vendors off the street without disturbing their sales.

This, he said, would arrest or reduce the attendant hazard on vendors' lives, as well as confront one of the root causes of traffic crisis on Abuja roads.

Responding, ANVA Chairman, Mr Edmond Arikpo, assured the minister of his members' readiness to cooperate with the FCTA to guarantee that no vendor sells newspapers on Abuja streets., adding that the meeting is an excellent step towards a positive direction, as it has afforded them the opportunity to freely exchange ideas with government.
