THE National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is to commence an on-line examination and tutorials for its students like other centres of Universities across the World. Vice Chancellor, Professor Olugbemiro Jegede who said this weekend however denied that the University has scrapped the Nursing programme offered by the institution.

He spoke with newsmen in Akure after the opening ceremony of the Nationwide Awareness workshop for Counselors of the University.

The VC however said that by next year all programmes relating to the University would be completely on-line where students can click on-line system of the university to learn and also have their examinations on-line with ease.

Jegede noted that the programme would within three years make the University an e-environment and thereby make the country technological literate.

Speaking on the alleged scrapping of the Nursing programmee, the Vice Chancellor said the little adjustment noticed in the programme was due to the request by the Nursing and Midwives National Council.

According to him, "part of the new requests of the council is that any student admitted for the Pre-registration Degree Programme and the Post-registration Degree programme must have credit in Biology, Chemistry and Physics which was not the usually practice before now.

"Let me tell you that the little change in the admission of students into the Nursing programme in the University was due to the leadership change in the Nursing and Midwives National Council of Nigeria that insisted that the pre requisite of having credit in the three core subjects should not be waived.

"But, we are saying that Nursing programme is not scrapped at all as speculated in some quarters, we are still running the Pre-registration Degree programme and whoever among the practicing nursing who cannot seat to obtain the three compulsory subjects at the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) or National Examination Council (NECO) can opt for other science programme in the Institution", he said.

The State Deputy Governor, Otunba Omolade Olawateru said that he was optimistic that the workshop would meet the desired goal of upgrading the skill of the Counselors in the application of computer system in their various tasks most especially in Information Communication Technology (ICT).

"As we are all aware, the world is now a global village, a dimension that makes information easily accessible to all and sundry.

"Therefore the most important thing an establishment or individual can possess in today's dynamic world is information, in the form of more refined and analyzed records, for inter and intra organizational relationships".
