Gambia: The Livestock Marketing Agency

25 November 2008

Described by many as timely, the enactment of the Livestock Marketing Agency Bill is necessary in enabling the country to regulate the commercialization and marketing of livestock.

Tabled by SoS Ousman Jammeh and endorsed by National Assembly Members, the Bill constitutes an appropriate move to safeguard the interests of Gambians. The establishment of the Livestock Marketing Agency is meant to ensure that farmers get maximum profits from their livestock.

The new dispensation will likely be more profit-oriented for farmers, as it will drastically reduce the role of middle men and dealers in the commercialization process. In the wake of soaring food prices, such a necessary measure will certainly help to contain any negative impacts on Gambians' pocket money. This will greatly help to put an end to the rampant price inflation in the livestock market.

The bill comes at a time when the Gambian leader has already urged meat sellers to stay away from speculations. As part of efforts geared towards regulating the prices of basic commodities, meat and other essential items, the new dispensation augurs well for the country.
