Nigeria/Equatorial Guinea: Falcons Lose to Equatorial Guinea

25 November 2008

Nigeria's Super Falcons failed to reach the Final of the African Women Championships for the first time in the competition's 10-year history after they were beaten 1-0 by hosts Equatorial Guinea.

A horrendous goalkeeping blunder by Precious Dede, who bundled a harmless freekick into her own net, handed the hosts a famous victory and a chance to claim their first ever title when they play the winners of the second semifinal between Cameroon and South Africa.

The Falcons, who have been shockingly poor all through the tournament, scoring just two goals all campaign, dominated the encounter, but failed to find a cutting edge as the first half finished 0-0.

The trend continued in the second, and matters were settled by a horrific goalkeeping blunder by Dede, a veteran of three previous tournaments.

Nigeria will now have to suffer the indignity of playing the third place match against the losers of the second semifinal.
