Tunisia: World Bank Hails Country's Reform Efforts in Higher Education and Scientific Research

25 November 2008

Tunis — A high-level delegation from the World Bank met on Tuesday in Tunis, with the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Mr Lazhar Bououni.

The delegation which is led by Mr Steen Jorgensen, the Bank's Head of human resources, hailed Tunisia's efforts in higher education and scientific research, which has led to several wide ranging reforms such as the adoption of the new diploma system dubbed LMD (Bachelor, Masters and Phd), the opening up of the university on the country's economic environment, the incentives to encourage university graduates to set up their own enterprises and the diversification of branches likely to meet the needs of the employment market.

"Tunisia's success in these sectors, encourages the World Bank to strengthen its cooperation with your country" said Mr Jorgensen to the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, during the meeting they held.

On his part, Mr Bououni noted that the World Bank's favourable opinion to the various reforms launched by Tunisia to overhaul its higher education system towards a greater employability of university graduates, will encourage the ministry to press even further for the diversification of branches, the reinforcement of the professional Masters diploma, as well as the practical training of students.

The World Bank cooperates with Tunisia's ministry of higher education and scientific research on several issues relative to boosting evaluation, quality, standardization of the curricula with international norms, and the anchoring of the culture of enterprise.
