Tunisia: El Kef to Commemorate Fiftieth Anniversary of the Passing Away of the Great Tunisian Singer 'Saliha'

25 November 2008

Tunis — Some voices leave an indelible print in our memories, such was the case of the great Tunisian singer Saliha. Fifty years after her untimely death at 44, her native town El Kef, located in north western Tunisia will remember Saliha with a rich cultural program which includes musical performances as well as a conference on her art given by renowned music specialists.

The event which is organized by the regional cultural delegation for the preservation of heritage of El Kef, will take place from November 26 to November 28,2008.

For three days, El Kef will vibrate to the sounds of the music troupe of El Hadhra as well as that of traditional "Malouf" (Andalusian music) played by an Algerian troupe. However the highlight of the event will undoubtedly be the performance given by the Rachidia troupe which will pay tribute to the great singer by performing some of her immortal songs such as "Fraag Ghzali" (My lover's farewell), "Ourdhouni Zouz Sbaya" (I met two maidens) and "Oum El Hassen Ghanet", which are part and parcel of the rich Tunisian popular musical repertoire.

Her unique repertoire, is often revisited by Tunisian and Arab performers alike.

Gifted with a strong and highly idiosyncratic voice, Saliha was a genuine artist, who gave everything to her art and her public.

Following her death in Tunis on November 26, 1958, a crowd estimated at 20,000 people will attend her burial.

On December 21,1998, Tunisia's Posts issued a commemorative stamp dedicated to Saliha as part of a series commemorating other great Tunisian artists including Ali Riahi and Kaddour Srarfi.
