APPARENTLY moved by the problem of power supply in the Federal Capital Territory, the Supervising Minister in charge of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Remi Babalola, said Monday that arrangements have been concluded to parley with the management of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).
Disclosing this in Abuja at the end of the FCT Executive Committee Meeting (EXCO), Babalola who noted that the action is aimed at improving electricity supply to the Federal Capital Territory, said it has become imperative to fashion out ways of improving electricity supply to the Federal Capital Territory against the backdrop of its strategic role as the nation's capital city, the seat of government and the city accommodating majority of members of the diplomatic community resident in Nigeria.
According to Babalola who doubles as the Minister of State for Finance, Abuja is the window in which the world sees Nigeria and therefore everything must be put in place in the interest of the entire country, adding that improved power supply to the Federal Capital Territory would also impact positively on the economic lives of residents of the Territory, especially the traffic problems being faced in some districts of the Federal Capital City (FCC) at peak hours.
The Minister emphasized that there is the need for constant power supply to the traffic lights in the Federal Capital City from at least 6am to 6pm to curb the excesses of some motorists, thereby reducing traffic crisis and avoidable accidents in Abuja.
Meanwhile, the Supervising Minister has directed Chairmen of the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory to redouble their efforts in maintaining the environment in the satellite towns, just as he stressed that they have no excuse not to regularly collect solid waste being generated in their respective Councils.
Babalola who reiterated that the FCT Administration has not been tampering with the allocations coming to the Area Council from the Federal Government, said with this, they must deliver democratic dividends to the people.
