Angola: Cuba to Grant Over 200 Scholarships Per Year

26 November 2008

Luanda — Angola will benefit annually, in the coming five years, from 200 new scholarships offered by the Cuban government, under the existing co-operation between the two countries, in the domain of education, ANGOP has learnt.

Half of this number will be designed for the area of Health Sciences, this was announced on Tuesday, in Luanda, during the first working meeting of the Cuban minister of Higher Education, Juan Vela Váldés, with officials of Angola's State Department for Higher education.

Juan Vela Váldés, who is in Luanda since Tuesday for a four-day visit to Angola, said the meeting serves to assess the work done since the signing, in 2007, of the co-operation protocol that aims at reinforcing the presence of Cuban teachers in the country.

The accord also aims at increasing the number of scholarships for Angolan students in the coming five years in the domains of health, pedagogy, engineering, natural sciences and cattle breeding.

"We will also grant scholarships at the level of post-graduation, Master's degree, and Doctorate", said the source, adding that the implementation of the project starts in 2009, and it is expected for February the start of the course on medicine and September for other areas.

"We have been transmitting our experience to Angola so that more universities can be open. Cuba has currently 65 universities and intends to reach, in 2009, one million of graduated students, in a population estimated at 12 million inhabitants", he said.

On the occasion, the Secretary of State for Higher Education, Adão do Nascimento, said Cuba shows that it is a secure partner to strengthen the training of cadres in Angola and its teaching institutions.

At least 195 Cuban teachers work in Angola at the state-run Agostinho Neto University, in various provinces.
