President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has urged the management of the Monrovia Transit Authority to work towards extending the activities of the Authority to other parts of the country.
Speaking Saturday in Gardnersville when Government introduced recently acquired transport buses, the President said the authority must embark on plans that would lead to an extension of its activities throughout the country.
She lauded the Canadian charity, the McCall McBain Foundation for supporting Government efforts to ease the transportation burden of citizens.
According to an Executive Mansion release, the Foundation provided a grant for US$500,000 to secure the purchase of ten buses to aid Liberia's public transport service.
The Liberian leader said her request for the buses was geared towards easing the difficulty faced by students in the country.
The President has accordingly announced that all students wearing uniforms with identification cards will pay only 5 Liberian dollars to board the buses to school. The Liberian leader commended the McCall McBain Foundation for their interest in Liberia.
"Whatever gains I make internationally would amount to nothing unless all Liberians demonstrate the urge to effect change," the President asserted.
The President, accompanied by Vice President Joseph Boakai was later accorded an inaugural ride in one of the buses which took them from the offices of the Authority to the Barnersville suburb of Monrovia.
In earlier remarks, the Managing Director of the Monrovia Transit Authority, Mr. Senwan Wiah, commended the Liberian Government for its support.
He said the Authority was prepared to ensure that the President's directive that pay only LD$5 to board the buses to and from school, is upheld. Mr. Wiah also commended President Johnson Sirleaf for turning over to the MTA all 25 buses recently donated by the Spanish Government.
The launching program was also attended by the Mayoress of Monrovia, Mrs. Ophelia Hoff-Saytumah; Transport Minister Jackson Doe and staff of the Monrovia Transit Authority.
