Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State has approved the release of funds for the treatment of over 120 poor children suffering from Noma in the state with some requiring plastic surgery.
The team of surgeons from the Noma Children Hospital, Sokoto is in the state for one week to conduct various degrees of operations on patients ranging from those with cleft lip, cleft pallet, goiter to those suffering from concrem oris with the entire medical bills settled by the state Government.
The leader of the team of the surgeons is Dr. Abubakar Bakare of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. A Noma surgery costs about N200,000, which many of the patients in Bauchi state cannot readily afford because of abject poverty.
A statement signed by Maigari Mohammed Khanna, Director Press Affairs and Public Relations to the Bauchi state governor said this is the first time the Bauchi state Government is engaging the services of the Noma Hospital in a large scale to offer succour to the poor patients and the surgery had already commenced.
Some of the patients and their parents, according to the statement, commended the administration of Malam Yuguda for evolving policies and measures that were aimed at improving their living standards.
The statement noted that since coming into office, the Yuguda administration hadin the last 18 months initiated health policies that had improved the living standard of the Bauchi people, particularly children and women who are the most devastated by medical problems.
One of the policies that had impacted on the lives of women and children in the state is the free medical treatment and nutritional supplements for expecant mothers, infants and under- five children resulting in the influx of patients from the neighboring states.
