Sierra Leone: 14 Armed Robbers Nabbed, Two Vehicles Retrieved

Police officers attached to the Kissy and Congo cross police stations Wednesday confirmed the arrest of fourteen armed robbers who have been terrorizing residents of Freetown and it environs.

Local unit commander (LUC) of Kissy police station, chief superintendent Thames Mustapha Lahai and assistant superintendent in charge of crimes at the Congo cross police station, Sheku Tejan Kamara made the joint statement during the weekly police press briefing in Freetown.

LUC Lahai said on Saturday 22nd November 2008 a team of police officers and some members of the public intercepted a taxi with registration number AOM 901 loaded with stolen items worth millions of leones.

Lahai said there has been an increase in armed robbery incidences in the city which has prompted them to augment their regular security patrols and improve community policing partnership in his area of operations.

"I usually engage youth groups to find out the activities of armed robbery at Kissy and fortunately a group at Mayenkini in Cabala town in collaboration with police officers intercepted a taxi driven by two armed robbers, Mohamed Sheriff and Karim Mansaray.

The two were arrested and upon interrogation they confined that indeed the stolen items were ransacked at Aberdeen.

"Upon further investigations we were able to conduct a search warrant at their resident at Kissy, where a total number of nine persons were arrested including the following exhibits: one police handcuff, four mobile phones, two sets of television, one DVD player, two musical speakers and two car tapes," he said, adding that they are always determined to crackdown on criminals.

Similarly, the crime officer of Congo Cross police station, Tejan Kamara said residents of his operational areas have seven armed robbery cases and that the robbers made away with properties worth million of Leones, including two vehicles.

"Currently we have arrested three of those armed robbers who have been creating mayhem for residents.

Abdulai Jalloh, Mohamed Kargbo and Abdulai Kamara are now under police custody, we have retrieved one Prado Jeep and a Toyota forerunner from them," he disclosed.

Meanwhile, the accused persons have been charged to court.
