Somalia: Ethiopia Commanders 'Order' Ex-Mogadishu Mayor to Surrender Weapons

26 November 2008

Ethiopian army commanders and some Somali officials in the capital Mogadishu have ordered ex-Mogadishu Mayor Mohamed "Dheere" Omar to surrender his weapons and home, informed sources tell Garowe Online.

The sources said a private meeting between the Ethiopian army commanders and Somali officials loyal to Prime Minister Nur "Adde" Hassan Hussein met recently and collectively issued the decision.

"As far as we know, the weapons Mohamed Dheere has include 20 armed trucks," a Somali military source told Garowe Online.

The ex-Mayor is expected to also surrender his Mogadishu home, which was built during his mayoral term, the source added.

If Mohamed Dheere rejects the order, Ethiopian commanders "threatened to use force."

Three days ago, media reports leaked that Ethiopian commanders in Mogadishu visited Mohamed Dheere's residence and ordered him to "stop criticizing" Prime Minister Nur Adde and his government policy.

Mohamed Dheere, who belongs to the same sub-clan as the Prime Minister, is considered a close ally of President Abdullahi Yusuf.
