Benin — Oando Plc has donated N150 million to the burns and plastic surgery centre named after former Group managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation ab (NNPC), Dr Jackson Gaius-Obaseki, at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

At the Commissioning Wednesday Gaius-Obaseki, who was guest of honour, said the centre was borne out of the need to provide immediate relief and health care to victims of fire incidents.

He said though the country is blessed with competent medical practitioners, the greatest challenge they had always faced in the country was lack of facilities. He enjoined all to lend a hand in equipping the Centre, saying "let us see our roles in contributing towards equipping this centre as one of the purpose of our existence and creation," and promised that his family and friends will continue to deepen their relationship with UBTH.

In his speech read by Dr Peter Madu, NNPC Acting Group Managing Director, Abubakar Yar'Adua, advised those who steal from NNPC pipeline to desist from such acts and urged Nigerians to be safety conscious in handling flammable fires.

Earlier in his speech, Acting Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Dr Michael Ibadin, said the Centre was a child of circumstance, given rise to by the Jesse pipeline fire incident of 1998.He said the sheer number and degree of burns of victims over whelmed health facility in the neighbourhood and those of the UBTH, hence the decision to build the Centre.Managing Director, Oando Plc, Mr Wade Tinubu, who was Chairman on the occasion, recalled Gaius-Obaseki's meritorious service to the nation as GMD of NNPC.
