Nigeria: No Weapons Fashioned Against Me Shall Prosper, Says Ogundele

28 November 2008

Lagos — One of Nigeria's top female players as far as the list of home-based athletes of table tennis is concerned, Ganiat Ogundele, has made it categorically clear that as the number one seed at the 40th Asoju-Oba Championship, she was not going to entertain any thoughts that is not about going home with the competition's top prize of a brand new saloon car.

In this, Miss Ogundele does not want to care about the abilities and capabilities of her opponent, Olaide Atinuke, in today's final match at the Rowe Park Sports Centre.

She said: "I hope to win this and I am going to. There are no two ways about it. I have come this far to lose. Okay, anyone can say my opponent too, has come this far. But they should not forget I am the top seed of the tournament and that she is a seed below me.

"I have been asked about what I plan to do to counter her weapons. But let me say this, I don't go into battles with fellow players thinking or gloating about their weapons and how to counter them. No, instead, I just go about honing my own weapons.

"For instance, in this competition, one Ganiat Olatunde had given me the most problems. But I did not beat her trying to better her in her own areas of strength. That is not my style in this game. What I did was ensure my own weapons were working and well sharpened. That is what will be my strength in today's final."
