Abuja — Security outfits in Nigeria can offer quality service to the public despite the delicate nature of their functions, a former Director of the State Security Services (SSS), P.S Eghure, has said.
Eghure, former Lagos State Director of the SSS, made the observation on Thursday during a one-day sensitisation retreat for SERVICOM officers of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) at the anti-corruption commission's headquarters in Abuja.
The former security chief, who acknowledged that the job of SERVICOM officers in paramilitary organisations is difficult, stated however, that democracy has made it easier for them to operate.
"During military regimes, security operatives had a field day in breaching protocol; justice was being circumvented and some relevant portions of the constitution abrogated but when democracy was ushered the rule of law became the mantra of government."
He advised ICPC SERVICOM officers to observe the principle of confidentiality so they do not face unnecessary hazards that could cost them their lives.
