Asmara — A two-day conference on assessing sports activities in the Central region and mapping out future action program opened today at the Municipality Hall here in the capital.
Representatives of the PFDJ, the regional Assembly, sports community and invited guests are taking part in the conference organized by the Administration of the Central region. Papers on the historical origin of different fields of sport in the country, the progress made and future action programs were presented at the conference.
Speaking at the opening session, the Minister of Public Works, Mr. Abraha Asfaha, indicated that the long-standing sports activities in Eritrea have been operating with limited resources and that the desired potentials in this domain have not yet been harnessed. Noting that a new board has been appointed that would streamline new structural makeup, the Minister pointed out that the task would be expanded at all levels of schools, and administrations from the village to the regional level.
Mr. Abraha further explained that trainers would be assigned from inside the country and abroad so as to develop the nation's sports, and that the Government would make due contribution in putting in place major infrastructure facilities.
Likewise, the Administrator of the Central region, Mr. Tewolde Kelati, pointed out that in contrast to other African countries, the history of sport in Eritrea dates back to many years. He also stressed the need for strengthening sports organizational capacity and mapping out small and long-term plans so that the country could play due role in the international scenario.
The conference would conclude tomorrow adopting a number of resolutions and recommendations.
