South Africa/Lesotho: Amajita Thrash Lesotho

28 November 2008

Amajita started the 2008 Metropolitan COSAFA Under-20 Championship with a bang when they walloped Lesotho 4-0 in an almost one sided game played at Absa Stadium in the opening fixture of the annual tournament.

Amajita started the game on a high note as in the first minute Kaizer Chiefs striker Mandla Masango got a the ball on the right flank but his cross was not met by any South African player.

In the 4th and 9th minutes, Amajita again had chances which went begging, but the goal was soon to come and in the 13th minute Thulani Serero scored after a cross from Michael Morton was not well cleared by the Lesotho defence and the ball fell in the path of Serero, who made no mistake with a low shot past keeper Kanalelo Mokhooane.

From here on South Africa dominated the proceeding with very little opposition from Lesotho, and as pressure mounted on the visitors, their captain Thabiso Mohapi received a yellow card after fouling Serero.

Amajita defender Sibusiso Mxoyana had a 30 yard shot parried for a corner by goalkeeper Mokhooane and it was to be followed by another save by the keeper from Masibusane Zongo's header.

And as everyone thought that the first half will end with a solitary goal, Phumelele Bhengu added the second for Amajita after the keeper had fumbled from the initial shot from Zongo. The goalkeeper Mokhooane was immediately substituted after the second goal for Pule Aghente.

The referee Wilson Mpanisi from Zambia ended the first half with Amajita leading 2-0.

Phumelele Bhengu scored his second goal and the third for the team, just two minutes after the restart, when he received a long pass from the defence and the substitute keeper Aghente rushed off his line before the Moroka Swallows striker slotted the ball into the net to make it 3-0.

Amajita could have made it 4-0 but SuperSport United's Kamohelo Mokotjo failed to finish off inside the box, but instead he shot over the bar.

In the 61st minute both teams made changes, Amajita brought in Mapidima Smart for Mandla Masango while Lesotho took out Kopano Motaung for Teboho Nkabane.

In the 74th minute Serero also completed his brace to take the scoreline to 4-0 in favour of Amajita and just soon after the goal Bhengu was taken out for SuperSport United's George Maluleka.

However, after this goal Amajita missed several other chances which could have seen them win the game by a bigger margin. The culprits included Philane Khwela and Smart.

The final result Amajita 4, Lesotho 0
