Ghana: Tough Road for Satellites to Wyc

29 November 2008

Ghana's path to the World Youth Championships will be a tough one after the Black Satellites were drawn against host Rwanda, Cameroon and Mali for the African Youth Championships in January.

Mali and Cameroon are both giants of the African game at youth level and will be tough customers for the Satellites who must also deal with the host who will have strong home support behind them.

Ghana will open her account at the tournament on January 18th against Cameroon at the Stade National after host Rwanda and Mali square off in the opening game at the same venue on the same day.

Ghana will be back at the stade National on January 21 to play Mali before taking on the host at the same venue on January 24th.

All that makes Ghana's ambition to reach the World Youth Championship again difficult after failing to do so since 2001 when they finished as runners up behind Argentina.

To qualify for the World Youth Championships the Satellites will need to the semi finals and pick up one of the four tickets available to Africa at the Championships. But if Egypt who are host of the world event reach the last four, then a fifth place finish will be enough to earn a place in the championships.

Group B is made up the dominant force at this level Nigeria alongside Egypt, Ivory Coast and South Africa.

The championship will take place from January 18th to February 1st 2009.
