South Africa: Equatorial Guinea Win AWC

29 November 2008

Anonma Genevova's 6th goal of the tournament ensured that Equatorial Guinea became only the second side to win the African Women's Championship as the hosts claimed a 2-1 victory over South Africa.

Blessing Naduju gave the hosts the lead on 22 minutes, but Alice Mattlou drew Banyana Banyana level on 35 minutes, also her sixth goal of the tournament.

But the last word fittingly went to Anonma, who has been the competition's best player by far.

She curled in a 66th minute freekick from distance to send the partisan crowd into raptures and break South African hearts, as their best chance of the AWC trophy went up in smoke.
