Luanda — The president of the ruling MPLA party, José Eduardo dos Santos, said this Friday in Luanda that the approval of the Constitution of the Republic is an indispensable step to deepen the democratic process and improve the organisation and functioning of state institutions.
José Eduardo dos Santos made these declarations during the opening of works for the 13th ordinary session of MPLA Central Committee, taking place in Luanda Futungo II complex until Saturday.
Eduardo dos Santos said that the MPLA, through its parliamentary group, will present to the National Assembly a proposal to create an ad-hoc commission to elaborate the Constitution bill and promote a broad public discussion about it, before being taken to parliament for approval.
In conformity with the constitution, the President of the Republic will be elected, the statesman added, then he referred that "there are two currents of opinion in the Angolan society on how the president should be elected".
There are people who defend that the president should be elected by the parliament, that is through an indirect vote, and others say that citizens should elect directly the president of the Republic, through the universal direct vote.
"The Constitution will define the best way to choose and then we will all be in condition to elaborate the schedule for the presidential election", the governing MPLA party's president declared.
