Somalia: Explosions in Baidoa Kill Three

30 November 2008

At least 3 people were killed and 19 others were wounded Sunday in southern Somalia when three separate explosions rocked Baidoa, Radio Garowe reported.

All three explosions took place inside the main market in Baidoa, with witnesses saying suspected insurgents hurled hand grenades at government security forces before fleeing.

Dr. Adan Abdirahman "Gentleman" told reporters that 19 wounded persons were admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Baidoa police chief Col. Adan Biid said local police did not know the attackers, but suspect that Islamist rebels waging an anti-government insurgency are involved.

Two days ago, 4 people were killed and 15 others wounded in Baidoa blasts. No group claimed responsibility for either attack.

Separately on Sunday, Ethiopian troops vacated the largest military base in Baidoa and reportedly set up camp in the outskirts of the town.
