Somalia: Parliament Speaker, Ex-PM Gedi to 'Visit Puntland'

30 November 2008

A high-level delegation is expected in Somalia's self-governing region of Puntland, including ex-Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi, confidential sources tell Garowe Online.

The delegation is expected to arrive in Garowe, the capital of Puntland, on Monday and hold discussions with interim Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf, the sources added.

Along with Gedi, the delegation also includes Sheikh Adan "Madobe" Mohamed, the Speaker of parliament; ex-Mogadishu Mayor Mohamed Dheere; and a group of Mogadishu clan chiefs.

The reason for the expected visit to Puntland is unclear, but emerging reports tell Garowe Online that the delegation will meet with traditional and political leaders in Garowe, including Bogor Abdullahi Bogor Muse, who was crowned clan king last week. President Yusuf and Mr. Gedi have had strained relations since 2007, when Gedi resigned as the interim government's first Prime Minister.

In recent months, Speaker Madobe has opposed President Yusuf' s policies by engineering a parliament vote in September that rejected the return of 10 Cabinet ministers.

Somalia's leader has rejected a power-sharing deal signed between current Prime Minister Nur "Adde" Hassan Hussein and an opposition faction, led by Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.

The UN-endorsed deal faces many obstacles, including strong opposition from top government leaders in Somalia and Islamist rebels who have rejected the peace process altogether.
