Luanda — The 53rd edition of the year-end international race "São Silvestre", of December 31, in Luanda, will take the equivalent to Usd 300,000, with the finish at "Cidadela" sports stadium, contrary to the previous "Coqueiros".
The fund has been released by Angolan Government and registration for the competition started Friday, going until December 26.
The information were released by the chairman of the Angolan Federation of Athletics (FAA), Carlos Teixeira, at a press conference for presentation of the programme.
Carlos Teixeira said six countries have confirmed participation. They are Zambia, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Portugal.
He mentioned Avelino Dumbo and Ernestina Paulino, currently training in southern Huila province, under coach Lazaro João, as the main Angolan representatives in the competition.
Expecting the participation of 5,000 people, this year's contest is introducing some innovations. They are the short distance Families Mini-race and the return of the finish line to the Cidadela stadium that was used until 2004.
The innovations include the use of electronic chips to permit a better control and classification system, following the 2004 experience.
The winners of both men and women categories will get a Usd 10,000 prize each, with the second, third and fourth getting 8,000, 6,000 and 4,000 respectively.
The 2007 edition of the "São Silvestre" was won by Kenyan Elijah Nyabuti, with 46:35 minutes.
Angolan João Ntyamba, who has just quit competition, came third with 47:56. Among females, Grac Momany (Kenya) won with 53:13, while Angola's best, Teresa Tchicolili, finished third with 56:36.
