Uganda: Government to Recruit PE Teachers

Kampala — THE Ministry of Education is to recruit physical Education (PE) teachers to revive the practice in schools.

The commissioner for physical education and sports Dan Tamwegere, said last Tuesdaywhile addressing education stakeholders at Kesese Primary School.

He said in the past PE was compulsory but the subject had deteriorated. "In the coming month, we are going to run an advert, calling for applications from teachers trained in Physical Education."

"I can assure you that the Government has a department to promote Physical Education. What is remaining is for stakeholders to play their part," he added.

Tamwegere said PE would also be taught in secondary schools. He said the ministry wanted to make it compulsory for both secondary and primary school teachers to take the course during their training.

He urged the Government to provide games and sports facilities. He also challenged schools to use their resources to promote PE and sports.

The assistant chief administrative officer, Johnson Mutigwanda, noted that students were motivated to join schools by the sports facilities at their disposal.
