Uganda: Bank of Baroda Chief in Country

Kampala — BANK of Baroda global chairman and managing director is in the country as a guest to witness the opening ceremony of the bank's eighth branch at Kawempe, a Kampala suburb.

Mangalore Devadas Mallya is a high profile, versatile and seasoned banker. He took over as chairman in May this year.

Bank of Baroda is India's international bank represented n 25 countries through its 72 branches, including branches of its seven subsidiaries. Mallya started his banking career by joining India's one of the prestigious Bank-Corporate Bank in 1976.

In a career spanning over 32 years, he has served India's prestigious bank in various capacities.

Prior to taking over charge of Bank of Baroda, he was chairman and managing director of Maharashtra, India.

Mallya has a wide exposure to management education and has been on various high level committees of Indian Bank's Association and National Institute of Bank Management, Pune, India.

Under his able and dynamic leadership, Bank of Baroda has made progress in all business parameters.

Bank of Baroda is among the companies listed onto the Uganda Securities Exchange. It was also the first bank to be listed on the bourse.

This followed the Government's decision to divest its 20% shareholding in the bank through the stock exchange about 10 years ago.

Bank of Baroda is among the six local companies that have been listed on the 10-year-old local bourse so far but the exchange officials target up to 60 firms in the near future.
