Kampala — THE Government delegation to the Juba peace talks yesterday flew to Juba, South Sudan for the anticipated signing of the final peace agreement with LRA leader, Joseph Kony, today.
The Chief Government negotiator, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda led the team. "We hope Kony is not fooling again as he has done in the past. We hope he will not only sign but will implement all requirements of the agreement," delegation spokesperson, Capt. Chris Magezi said.
The Chief Mediator, Dr Riek Machar, the LRA peace team and the cessation of hostilities monitoring team are already in Ri-Kwangba at the DR Congo-Sudan border, where the signing ceremony is expected to take place.
Machar and the LRA team led by its chairman, Dr David Nyekorach Matsanga, was yesterday scheduled to brief Kony on the content of the final peace agreement, ahead of the signing ceremony. The mediators were joined by traditional and religious leaders led by Acholi paramount chief Rwot David Achana and Archbishop John Baptist Odama, respectively.
Matsanga, in an interview with the Voice of America, asked the world to be patient with the rebels. "Peace comes from very far. It takes a long journey. I have been accused of character assassination and I have been insulted, but I have kept on going for peace until I reach this peaceful resolution of the conflict." "Kony has told me the LRA is determined to end this conflict peacefully," he said.
