Kampala — THE United States Army working under the US Central Joint Task Force Horn of Africa has started reconstructing Aromo Bridge in Lira District.
The team, headed by Lt. Anthony Williams, declined to disclose the cost of the project.
Williams said the project was being implemented jointly by the works ministry and the Uganda People Defence Forces.
The Bridge was washed away by the 2007 floods that affected Lango, Teso, West Nile and Acholi regions.
"We expect to complete the construction as fast as possible to ease transportation of farmers' produce," Williams said recently.
The district secretary for works and technical service, David Kennedy Odongo, commended the soldiers for taking up the initiative to reconstruct the bridge.
If completed, Odongo said, the bridge will connect the district to Acholi and increase revenue through cross-border trade.
Odongo identified some of the bridges which needed urgent rebuilding as Baya, Amonmaka, Orit, Ayumu, Ogur-Apala and Aloi-Abako.
Aromo is the second bridge to be reconstructed in the region. The first was Agwa which was damaged by a UPDF tanker in 2004 while pursuing the Lord's Resistance Army rebels.
It was reconstructed by the Restoration of Agricultural Livelihood in Northern Uganda Component.
