Liberia: 'Women in Policing Will Defeat Crime' - IGP

1 December 2008

Liberia's Police Inspector-General, Beatrice Munah Sieh Brown, has predicted that the involvement of women into policing will lead to an uncompromising defeat of crimes in the West African sub-region.

According to the inspector, women are prepared to make the sacrifices to ensure that crimes are uprooted from the region. Col. Brown spoke Thursday at the opening of a two-day West Africa Police Women Association Conference at the Monrovia City Hall.

The conference which is being held under the theme "West Africa Police Women as Partners in Fighting Crimes" brings together about one hundred participants from law enforcement institutions in Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and host Liberia.

The Police chief said that women would be unstoppable when they are encouraged to become law enforcers. She told the participants that crimes' records on various West African countries have shown that cross-border crime, forgery, hijacking, kidnapping and drugs trafficking, rape, corruption, prostitution, among others are similar in statistics.

Inspector-General Sieh-Browne indicated that crimes are not only threats to national security but also pose a major risk to the culture of preace and the rule of law.

She pointed out that crimes targeting women and girls have risen to alarming heights despite initiatives by several governments in West Africa to deal with it, adding "Violence against women remains a non-disappearing dot on the police crimes eradication map."

She called for an evaluation mechanism to be put in place which would determine policies on the records. The opening session of the conference was attended by Vice President Joseph Boakai, Justice Minister Philip Banks, among other dignitaries. The conference end on Friday with resolution expected from participants.
