The National Sports Commission (NSC) has begun moves to withdraw from the direct management of national sports federation with an invitation to willing corporate organisations to adopt and fund any of 31 federations presently under its management.

According to a statement signed by the Ag. Director General of the NSC, Chief (Dr.) Patrick Ekeji, the decision to invite the private sector to adopt and fund any of the federations it has interest in is "in line with the Federal Government posture on Public Private Partnership (PPP) policy on service delivery and in consonance with the policy thrust of the present administration in the NSC".

Stressing that it shall continue to play its regulatory role while encouraging the private sector in the new partnership expected to be consummated, Chief Ekeji stated that "The Presidents of the Boards that shall emerge from this concessioning shall automatically constitute the membership of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) which tenure as well as that of the various Sports Federations came to an end after the Beijing Olympic Games in August, 2008 having completed the four year Olympic circle."

Towards this end, the NSC has given a deadline of the noon of December 31, 2008 for the submission of expression of interest by corporate organisations stressing that, "Successful concessionees shall be invited for detailed discussions with the (Director General of the NSC)."

The deadline, the statement said, is to enable the NSC "put in place processes leading to election of the Executive Board of the NOC by the end of 30th April, 2009."

The listed sports federations are Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Nigeria Basketball Federation, Nigeria Amateur Boxing Association, Chess Federation of Nigeria, Nigeria Cricket Federation, Cycling Federation of Nigeria, Nigeria Golf Federation, Handball Federation of Nigeria and Gymnastic Federation of Nigeria.
