Nigeria: Gas Flare Out - Oil Producing Communities Insist On Dec. 31 Deadline

Oil producing communities in the country are insisting on the December 31, 2008 deadline for gas flaring in the country or, in the alternative, oil companies which are unable to meet up with the deadline should be made to vacate the areas in order to stop further degrada-tion of the environment.

The communities sent in a strong delegation to the Public Hearing conducted in Abuja last week by the Senetor Osita Izunaso-led Senate Committee on Gas Flaring (Prohibition and Punishment) Bill 2008, where they posited that unless proactive legislations were put in place, the oil producing areas may soon witness a "tsunami."
