Nigeria: Robbers Kill Four Policemen in Edo

Benin — Four policemen were yesterday killed in Benin City and Auchi, Edo State when suspected armed robbers swooped on them while on duty.

THISDAY gathered that the death of the policemen occurred in two separate areas of the state capital while they were carrying out their duties in the early hours of the day.

It was also gathered that the robbers after shooting the four policemen to death, zoomed off with their guns.

Meanwhile, as at the time of filling in this report no arrest had been made by police.

However, two of the dead policemen were said to be among the anti-crime patrol team attached to the New Benin police division along the Uselu-Lagos road.

While the other two were cut dead at Agbede community between Ewu and Auchi towns in Etsako West Local Government area of the state.

Sources said the rampaging robbers at the New Benin area had during the early morning attacked the unsuspecting police officers on duty killing a sergeant and a police constable.

Both policemen were brought to the Central Hospital, Benin at about 10:15am yesterday in the Police Anti-crime patrol pick up van with plate number NPF 3630B belonging to the New Benin division.

The other two victims of the attack met their death in the hands of the robbers while on duty at the Agbede police station area of the community.

The incident has caused tension among officers and men of the police command in the state.

The news of the robbery incident has also raised anxiety among workers, Okada riders and businessmen in the state capital as people besieged the CHB complex when the corpse of the two policemen from New Benin were brought to the hospital.

The corpses of the dead were later taken to an unknown location as the crowd increased in numbers.
