Nigeria: Ikhana Begs Militants for Iyaye

1 December 2008

Sharks manager, Kadiri Ikhana has made a passionate appeal to the militants who kidnapped the wife of the Rivers State Sports commissioner to release her unconditionally.

Joy Iyaye, wife of Boma Iyaye, the Rivers State sports commissioner was abducted about ten days ago on her way to work and is still in the custody of the kidnappers.

Ikhana, speaking on a live radio program in Port Harcourt asked the abductors to fear God and respect the fact that Joy Iyaye is a nursing mother.

"It was with great shock that we heard the news and I plead with whoever is responsible for this to please release her unconditionally.

"This kidnap comes at a time that Rivers State and the sports ministry are doing a lot to keep the youth busy and it makes nonsense of every program put in place for youth in the state," Ikhana said.

"She has a family especially her little baby who needs her so I beg them to please let her go in the name of God," Ikhana said.

The Shars team took a cue from Dolphins to pay Boma Iyaye a solidarity visit and encourage him.

Joy, Iyaye, a staff of Bank PHB was abducted at Abuloma road, on her way to work two Friday's ago.

The abductors first demanded one billion naira (about $8.4m) for her release but later reduced to three hundred million naira (about $2.5m).
