Abakiliki — Former Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Dr Emmanuel Oko-Isu and the Deputy Vice Chancellor (academics) of the University of Nigeria (UNN) Nsukka, Professor Francis Idike have been appointed as the Pro-chancellor and Vice Chancellor respectively of the State University, EBSU, by Governor Martin Elechi.

Other principal officers of the institution, who were also appointed to take over from the outgoing Governing Council include Mr Sam Nte Egwu, who becomes the Registrar, while Mr. Friday Ibiam assumes the position of the university librarian.

Also appointed into the governing council, are a private legal practitioner and former member of the State House of Assembly, Barrister Ray Akanwa, chairman of Ebonyi Local Government Area, Mrs. Adaeze Nwuzor, among others.

In two separate Government House statements signed by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the governor, Dr Onyekachi Eni and the Governor's Media Assistant, Chief Abia Onyike, the governor said the appointments were with immediate effect.

While Isu is expected to take over from Chief Francis Orji, as the chairman of the university's Governing Council, Idike, on his part is expected to take over from Professor Fidelis Ogah, whose tenure at EBSU expired since September.

Ogah had during the second convocation ceremony of the university, publicly announced his rejection of third term which the governor had earlier approved, saying having spent more than 20 years in the university as an administrator, he deserved some rest.

Only last week, the state government through a statement from Eni, had announced the dissolution of the university's Governing Council under the chairmanship of Chief Francis Orji, a former Minister of Police Affairs and one-time Deputy Governor in the old Imo State.

The appointment of the new Vice-Chancellor has brought to an end months of rivalry among interesting professors who were jostling for the position.

It has also dashed the hope of candidates from Ebonyi South Senatorial Zone who had hoped to take over from Ogah from Central Zone for sake of equity. The new Vice Chancellor, Idike is from Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone, which shares the same bloc with Central during the Old Abakaliki and Afikpo blocs.
