Namibian retailer Pick n Pay, a member of the Ohlthaver & List Group, has in co-operation with waste management company, Rent-a-Drum, introduced the country's first community recycling bank.
Located at Pick n Pay's Auas Valley store in Windhoek, the recycling bank enables customers and members of the public to dispose of recyclable materials in separate, colour-coded containers.
This waste is collected for recycling either locally or in South Africa, the company said in a statement issued recently.
Erwin Stegmann, Ohlthaver & List's group manager for safety, health, environment and quality, said the initial objective is to encourage the public to participate by bringing recyclable paper, glass, plastic, carton, cans and bottles from their homes.
"By making use of this new facility, members of the public can too play a part in ensuring a cleaner, healthier and safer natural environment," said Stegmann.
In due course the initiative will be extended to other branches of Pick n Pay in and outside Windhoek, he added.
Nampa Vet directorate suspends livestock movement in Omaheke * The Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) has announced the temporary suspension of all livestock movement in some parts of Omaheke communal areas.
The areas are Eiseb, Gam, Otjimbinde, Otjinene, Epukiro, Otjitui, Okakarara, Okamatapti and Okondjatu.
A media release issued by the Meat Corporation (Meatco) of Namibia's senior Manager for Corporate Communication, Mary Hansen, said this follows tracks of a single buffalo being found over the weekend that appears to have crossed the border from Botswana and entered the country in the Gam area.
Hansen said officials from Nature Conservation, DVS and the Namibian Police are trying to track the buffalo, while livestock in the area have been placed under surveillance.
She said that no livestock are showing any signs of any disease, adding that the Gam area is part of the surveillance zone of Namibia, and is separated from the free zones through fences maintained by the DVS.
The inclusion of areas outside Gam is done simply as a precautionary measure, and to facilitate the search for the beast, said Hansen.
