ThE maiden edition of the Inspector General of Police Cup, a soccer tournament featuring serving members of the Nigeria Police Force, has reached the semifinal stage, with four teams, set to battle for the two remaining slots available in the final, holding in Kano.
In the first semifinal match, holding today in Port Harcourt, Edo faces Kano, in what promises to be a thrilling affair as both sides attempt to make the final. It would be hard to predict which team would win as they both parade quality players, desirous of tasting success.
To get to this stage of the competition, Edo battled to an hard-fought 2-1 victory over Federal Capital Territory while Kano defeated Force Headquarters 5-4 on penalties. It was tough contest between both quarter-finalists and to prove how tight an affair it was, it took penalty kicks to determine the winner.
In the second semifinals match taking place tomorrow in Abeokuta, Gombe confronts Enugu, in another potentially explosive cracker.
To reach this stage, Enugu defeated Kogi 4-3 in a rescheduled match at Makurdi, as a result of the political crisis that has engulfed Jos, while Gombe did not get to kick the ball as they walked over Plateau side.
In a related development, one of the sponsors of the competition, Somerset Energy Resources, is endowing the Fair-play trophy while Spring Capital, is to sponsor the Most Valuable Player award
Meanwhile, the Management Committee of the IG Cup, has been taking delivery of the branded jerseys from Proserve Securities.
Spokesman of the body, Austin Mgbolu, said the imported kits arrived the country at the weekend, in good time for the last leg of the competition, which takes place on December 6 in Kano.
