Luanda — The speaker of the National Assembly (Angolan Parliament), Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos Sunday in Kampala, Uganda, met the delegation from the Democratic Republic of Congo on the sidelines of the 31st conference of African
Parliamentary Union (APU), due to close today.
The situation in the eastern DRC and the need for the strengthening of parliamentary diplomacy topped the 40-minute talks between the delegations of the two neighbouring countries.
Open on Saturday by Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni, the conference focused on the situation in Zimbabwe, Somalia and Democratic Republic of Congo, and the participants have proposed the creation of parliamentary groups for the follow of the situation in those countries.
It was also defined that Burkina Faso is the next country that will host the 32nd conference of APU, in 2009, while Guinea-Equatorial will hold it in 2010.
The conference will close with the reading of conclusions and recommendations.
Two main themes have dominated since Saturday the debate of African parliamentary leaders, namely "the development of Agriculture in Africa, aiming at facing the food crisis and contributing to poverty reduction" and "promotion of health in the continent, through the fight
against HIV/AIDS and betterment of child and maternal health".
The conference will also analyse on the proposal for the institution within the organisation "African Parliamentary Conference on Migrations and Development", for the contribution to the adoption of a regional migratory policy.
