A DRAMATIC electric storm brought a deluge to parts of Windhoek early on Friday, with up to 100 millimetres of rain measured in the city after hours of heavy early-morning rain.

More rain can be expected over most of Namibia for the rest of this week, weather forecaster Olga Tjiueza of the Meteorological Service of Namibia's office at Hosea Kutako International Airport said yesterday.

Rainy weather is expected to be confined to the northern part of the country today, but should shift further to the south again from tomorrow, she said.

From Wednesday to the coming weekend, a few thundershowers can be expected over the northern, central, eastern and southeastern parts of Namibia, Tjiueza said.

Only the southwestern and far western parts of the country are expected to remain dry throughout the week, she said.

After receiving heavy downpours early on Friday, most of Windhoek remained dry for the rest of the weekend.

Rolling thunder and lightning accompanied a rainstorm that dumped upwards of 80 millimetres of rain over mostly the eastern and northern parts of the city early on Friday.

While more than 80 mm was measured in parts of Eros and also in the Lafrenz Industrial Area, 103 mm was reported from Ludwigsdorf in the east of the city.

At the Windhoek Met Office close to the centre of the city, 51 mm of rain was measured, the Meteorological Service said yesterday.

According to other figures available from the Namibia Weather Network, 24 mm of rain was measured in the Suiderhof area, 11 mm in Olympia, 28 mm in Hochland Park, and 5 mm in Academia.

At Eros Airport, 3,6 mm was measured on Friday.

According to the Namibia Weather Network, about 61 mm of rain was reported from Omaruru on Friday.

At Hosea Kutako International Airport, between 28 and 40 mm was recorded on Friday, while 3 mm was reported from Grootfontein, 2 mm from Rundu and 0,4 mm from Keetmanshoop, the Meteorological Service reported.

Over the 24 hours to early Saturday morning, 12,8 mm of rain was measured at Rundu, 6,9 mm at Grootfontein, 0,5 mm at Khorixas and 9,2 mm at Mariental, it was also reported.

Yesterday morning, measurements of 7,9 mm were recorded at Katima Mulilo, 13,9 mm at Rundu, 6 mm at Nkurenkuru, 1,1 mm at Grootfontein, and 4,6 mm at Gobabis.
