Nigeria: Uloma Mbuko - Country Queen of Golf

30 November 2008

For those who cover the game of golf in Nigeria, it is no longer news each time, Abuja based female golfer Uloma Mbuko wins at any golf tournament. She is so good she can play the rest of the pack with one hand tied behind her back. Whenever she makes an appearance at any event, the female golfers usually concede the first position to her before hitting a ball. She is that good. She was so good, some ladies plotted against her on several occasions. These days, the trend is to declear any tournament a net event, in a way ruling her out. But that has not stopped the Nigerian Lorena Ochoa from doing what she knows how to do best-winning.

Just last week at the Ikoyi Ladies Open, the slim, slightly built golfer again proved she was miles ahead of other players as she won the 34th edition of the Ikoyi Ladies open championship with a whooping nine strokes margin.

The event was concluded at the golf section of Ikoyi Club 1938 last week after two days of golfing hostilities featuring over 100 lady golfers from all over the country.

Lady Captain of the section, Maureen Reece said it was fulfilling for her see the number one golfer lady in the country retain her title; "I am really ecstatic about it, every time you watch her, you see a lady that is continuously working on her game and it is gratifying seeing that she won the title for the third straight time"

The 36 holes championship was sponsored by Guinness Nigeria Plc, Indomie, Virgin Nigeria, british Airways, Federal Palace Hotel and Johnie Walker. Other winners at the event included Val Mantew who was runner up in the overall gross event. Chinyere Alamu of Ikeja Golf Club also went home with the best gross fisrt day title, while Adenike Marinho, D. Otabor, Hanah Obadina and Adenike Ade niran also picked honours at the ladies event.
