Somalia: Islamic Courts Union Captures Daynunay Village

1 December 2008

Mogadishu — The Islamic Courts Union in Somalia captured Daynunay Village on Sunday near Baidoa town, the seat of Somali Parliament, after fighting with tribal militias, witnesses said.

Abdirahin Isse Adow, a spokesman for the Islamic Courts Union, said it was his group that had taken over Deynunay.

We dont want these people to feel insecurity, then evacuate, he said, referring to intense fighting earlier in the year that displaced hundreds of thousands of Somalis.

Many residents said they were happy to see the Islamic gunmen.

Deynunay became famous when the Ethiopian troops backing the transitional federal government of Somalia and the Islamist fought in 2006.

Many towns in southern Somalia, including Merca, Kismayu, Qoryooley and Buulo Mareer, are now in the hands of the Shabab, a military wing of the Islamic courts.
