Somalia: Ethiopian Troops Arrest High Rank Government Officials

1 December 2008

Mogadishu — The Ethiopian forces in Mogadishu have arrested 3 Somali government officials on Monday; sources close to the presidential palace confirmed.

The Somali officials rejected to hand over their weapons to the Ethiopian soldiers.

A government official who spoke to Shabelle Media Network on condition of anonymity confirmed the reports.

The reports say officials were planning to escape weapons including battle wagons from the presidential place to the Semi-autonomous region of Puntland.

The Ethiopian soldiers are reportedly planning to hand over the security of the presidential palace to inclusive soldiers.

The presidential palace is now under control of soldiers very close to the Somali president.

The Ethiopians had previously ordered former Mogadishu mayor to hand over his weapons.
