Angola: Govt Committed to Reducing HIV/Aids Rate - Welfare Minister

Luanda — The Angolan Social Welfare minister, João Baptista Kussumua, said Monday here that the government is making all efforts in order to slash down the HIV/AIDS rate, affecting the country.

The Cabinet minister stated this at the opening of the launching ceremony of HIV/AIDS voluntary testing campaign, taking place at "António Jacinto" Square.

Set to end on 7 December, the event is part of celebrations of 01 December, World AIDS Day.

João Baptista Kussumua said that the setting up of more than 93 units for treatment and testing against HIV/AIDS will help the HIV-positive people search of testing services to prolong their lives.

To him, AIDS worries the government, families and mainly those who are families of HIV-infected people who should reflect on the meaning and danger of this pandemic.

The minister also noted that the United Nations had considered Angola, four years ago, a country of hope in relation to the number of the infected people. He added that although this sounds good for the country, but you should not forget that the population should be more and more on their guard.

"A national commission for combat against AIDS led by the Angolan Head of State has been set up, with view to deal with the seriousness of the epidemic", explained the minister.

The event brought together Health vice-minister, Carlos Alberto, vice-governor of Luanda, Bento Soyto, the US ambassador to Angola Dan Mozena, NGOs representatives, Physicians, university lecturers and others.
