Uganda: Teachers Want Tax Exemption

1 December 2008

Kampala — TEACHERS in the north have asked for tax exemption.

The Gulu education officer, the Rev. Vincent Ocheng Ocen, said: "Teachers are wondering why sh7,000 should be deducted from their sh200,000 salaries when soldiers, the Police and prison warders do not pay tax."

He argued that since NGOs were lobbying the Government for tax exemption on imported vehicles, teachers should be considered.

Ocan was on Thursday speaking at the handover of 50 desks donated by URA, the national tax body, to Unyama National Teachers College.

The items were pledged by the URA commissioner general, Allen Kagina, who presented a paper on taxation at the institution in September.

Ocen advised that the school be upgraded to a college of education affiliated to Gulu University so as to offer degree and diploma courses.

URAâ-àassistant commissioner Mike Chibita appealed to the locals to pay taxes so that the Government can build roads and provide social services.

Milton Odongo, the Gulu deputy resident district commissioner, called for the arrest of tax evaders.

Charles Amone, the chairperson of the governing council, called for a special fund to revamp the education sector in the north.

David Ojok Okeny, the Unyama principal, thanked URA for the donation and called for more funds to build teachers' houses and purchase beds for students.

"I wish you had entered the dormitories. You would have seen mattresses spread on the cement because of lack of beds."

He said the property was destroyed during the civil war.
